Two elderly residents of a north Edmonton apartment building died after a vehicle crashed into the structure late Monday, striking a gas main and triggering an explosion and fast-spreading fire, city emergency officials and family members say.
What happened
The couple, identified by family as Major Singh Bhandal, 85, and Surinderjit Kaur Bhandal, 82, lived in a mixed-use building at the corner of 132 Avenue and 82 Street in the Killarney neighbourhood.
According to relatives and images from the scene, a vehicle lost control and struck the building, hitting a gas distribution line. The impact caused an explosion and a rapidly spreading blaze that sent heavy smoke into the sky. Fire crews responded to the address listed as 13126 82 St.

“What happened Monday night was a complete tragedy,”
said the couple’s grandson, who identified himself as Lali Toor. He said he arrived after seeing smoke and discovered his grandfather injured on a balcony. First responders attempted resuscitation at the scene, but Major Bhandal was too severely harmed by a fall after jumping from the balcony and was pronounced dead.
Surinderjit Kaur Bhandal was unable to escape the building. Her remains were recovered the following day, on Tuesday. Edmonton police have confirmed the deaths of an 85-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman linked to the fire.
