Cambridge officials and community members marked the city’s sporting past on Friday with the unveiling of a provincial plaque recognising the Galt Football Club, and the debut of the Ontario Soccer Hall of Fame’s travelling Soccer Time Capsule at Cambridge City Hall.
Plaque recognises early achievements
The plaque, presented by the Ontario Heritage Trust with support from the City of Cambridge and the Soccer Hall of Fame – Ontario, commemorates the achievements of early Canadian soccer teams. The city described the Galt Football Club as a “special piece of local sporting history.”
Historical highlights cited at the event include the club’s distinction as the first Ontario Cup champions and its success at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, where members of the team won gold.
Time Capsule on display at City Hall
As part of the celebration, the Ontario Soccer Hall of Fame’s travelling Soccer Time Capsule opened in Cambridge. The capsule is soliciting soccer-related memorabilia — such as stories, photographs and other items — from residents while it is displayed at City Hall.
