Barrie Police have charged a 25-year-old man from Scarborough after a months-long human-trafficking investigation that centres on the alleged exploitation of a Barrie woman.
Investigation and arrest
The Barrie Police Service Human Trafficking Unit says the probe began in May and identified a pattern of coercion and control. Investigators allege the accused, identified as Vincent Jones of Scarborough, initially lured a 23-year-old Barrie woman through social media and then exercised control over her for nearly two years.
Police say the suspect was arrested in Kitchener and faces a slate of charges. Authorities also released an image of a white Tesla sedan believed to be driven by the accused, asking the public to report sightings or information.
Charges laid
The Barrie Police statement lists the following charges against the accused:
- Human trafficking
- Procuring
- Material benefit from human trafficking and sexual services
- Assault
- Uttering threats
- Trafficking cocaine
- Two counts of failing to comply with a release order
Allegations and victim vulnerability
Police allege the accused exploited the woman’s substance dependency and forced her into the sex trade, keeping the proceeds. The service described the typical tactics of traffickers as including grooming through manipulation, emotional abuse, addiction, threats, violence, isolation and control.
"Human traffickers primarily focus on vulnerable individuals and typically engage in a process called ‘grooming,’" the service said in a news release.
Investigators urged residents to watch for possible signs of grooming or exploitation, such as sudden behavioural changes, withdrawal from friends and family, signs of physical abuse or neglect, or possession of unexplained gifts, money or phones.
Public appeal and supports
Barrie Police said they are releasing the accused’s name and images because they believe there may be other victims. Anyone with information is being encouraged to contact the Barrie Police Service. The news release also noted the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline as a resource for victims, survivors or those concerned about someone’s situation.
