The Brampton Summer Artists Market is staging its largest edition yet, organisers say, bringing together more than 40 vendors and a wide range of visual and craft artists for a community-focused showcase. The fifth-annual market, held on Sunday, grew out of a need expressed by local creators after the COVID-19 pandemic for more opportunities to sell and exhibit work locally.

Return to in-person sales after pandemic gaps

Organisers say the market began in 2022 in response to requests from artists seeking in-person venues to reach buyers and rebuild local arts networks. This year’s event features painters, potters, textile artists, photographers, printmakers, stationery and sticker makers, and comic and graphic-novel creators.

  • Over 40 vendors are expected to attend.
  • Artists include painters, knitters, craft artists, clothing and textile vendors, and graphic novelists.
  • The market moved from The Rose Theatre lobby to a new site for this edition.

Indie creators say the market matters

Local comic creator Ricky Lima, who grew up in Brampton and has had work published by IDW Top Shelf, said the market is valuable for creators who do not operate their own online stores or who need direct contact with customers.

“Things like this event are great for indie creators to get their work out there, to get their books out there,”

Lima said he values the in-person connection with fans and fellow creators. His graphic novel, Undergrowth, was picked up by a publisher in 2019 and was nominated for the Ignatz Award for Promising New Talent. He told INsauga he has stepped back from chasing publishing deals to rediscover the creative satisfaction of connecting directly with readers.

Organisers, aims and what to expect

Gardenia Flores of the Brampton Arts Organization said the market was established after the pandemic to respond to artists’ requests for local selling opportunities and community exposure. This year’s market is described as the biggest to date, with a wider range of vendors than in previous years.

Item Detail
Edition Fifth-annual (since 2022)
Vendor count More than 40
Previous location The Rose Theatre lobby

The market offers residents a chance to buy local art, meet creators and support independent small businesses. For many participants, organisers say, the value lies as much in networking and community connection as in immediate sales.

Further logistical details and the market’s exact new location were provided by organisers as part of event promotion; attendees should consult the Brampton Arts Organization or the event’s promotional materials for times and final site information.
