More than 300 participants turned out for the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC’s 16th annual Run, Sweat and Beers 5K, an evening event that combines a short-distance run with post-race refreshments and vendor booths to support the centre’s programming.
Fundraising and community outreach
The race, staged at South County Regional Park, is used to raise funds for the centre’s summer camps, fitness classes and arts and culture activities. Organizers said the event is intended to do more than generate revenue: it is a way to introduce new people to the JCC and encourage community participation in its services.
“These are truly communitywide,” said Levis JCC president and chief executive officer Marty Haberer. “There’s Jewish people. There’s not Jewish people. The whole community comes out.”
Organizers emphasised that participation should not be limited by cost. The centre’s leadership described the JCC as a mission-driven organisation seeking broad involvement from residents with diverse backgrounds.
Summer tradition with a social focus
For many attendees, the race has become an annual summer tradition. Associate vice-president of financial resource development, donor services and special events Elaine Riba said the event creates a festive atmosphere that encourages people to linger after the race.
- More than 300 runners participated in the 5K.
- The event supports JCC programmes such as camps, fitness and arts activities.
- Post-race offerings included beer, refreshments and food from multiple vendors.
After crossing the finish line, participants were served beverages and light food from more than ten vendors. Named businesses on site included Rita’s Italian Ice, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Raw Juce. A Raw Juce representative noted the sponsorship aligned with the company’s focus on healthy living and community connection.
Returning participants described the event as an opportunity for social connection as much as sport. One regular attendee said the fellowship and the chance to reconnect with familiar faces were key draws that keep people coming back each year.
Local consequences and context
Although the race is a brief athletic event, its impacts extend into programming and outreach for the Levis JCC. Funds raised contribute to ongoing offerings that serve families, older adults and individuals seeking recreational and cultural activities. The organisers’ emphasis on inclusivity suggests future events will continue to prioritise access and community integration.
