Woman in her 20s dies after being struck near Queensway and Hurontario
A woman in her 20s has died after a late-night collision in Mississauga, according to Peel Regional Police. Officers responded around 11:20 p.m. Saturday to the area of Queensway and Hurontario Street, where the pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and later succumbed to her injuries at a local trauma centre.
At a Sunday briefing, Sgt. Taylor Halfyard said the investigation to date indicates the woman was attempting to cross mid-block. Police say she fell after stepping off the median into westbound traffic and was then struck by a vehicle. The driver initially left the scene but returned within minutes.
Arrest made; charge upgraded after death confirmed
Police arrested the driver after he came back approximately eight minutes later. The initial allegation of failing to remain at a collision causing bodily harm was upgraded to failure to remain resulting in death once police confirmed the woman had died. Investigators say the driver has been released unconditionally for now while officers continue to gather evidence and assess the circumstances.
Halfyard said investigators are working to determine whether the collision was an accident or whether there was “criminal intent.”
Peel police did not release the names of the people involved. No additional details about the vehicle or the driver’s age were provided at the briefing.
Police appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage
Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area late Saturday to reach out to the Major Collision Bureau. Drivers travelling along Queensway or Hurontario around the time of the incident who may have recorded video are urged to share it with police.
- If you witnessed the collision or events leading up to it, contact Peel police investigators.
- Motorists with dashcam footage from around 11:20 p.m. Saturday near Queensway/Hurontario are asked to submit video to assist the investigation.
