Niagara Regional Police say they have identified the woman whose remains were uncovered during a house demolition in Niagara Falls in November 2023 and are now investigating her death as a homicide.
Identification after lengthy forensic work
In a news release, investigators confirmed the deceased as Brenda Marie LeBlanc, born in 1963. Police say the remains were probably at the Stanley Avenue property for many years — potentially dating back to the 1990s — and that identifying her required advanced forensic methods and collaboration with outside agencies.
Authorities credited work done with the Toronto Police Service, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and Othram Laboratories in Texas for reaching a determination. Police said genetic genealogy techniques, which combine DNA analysis with family tracing, were used last year to make the identification.
Site history and outstanding questions
The property on Stanley Avenue was a multi-unit dwelling from the 1970s until about 2018. Since then, police say the vacant house was often occupied by people experiencing homelessness. Investigators have not publicly established how LeBlanc was connected to the address.
"Although decades have passed, investigators believe that there are individuals who may have known Brenda or have information that could assist in determining the circumstances surrounding her death."
The force has not released further details about cause of death or any suspects. Police say they continue to seek information from anyone who knew LeBlanc or who may have relevant knowledge about the property and events leading up to her death.
