Severe-storm watch covers Red Deer and much of central Alberta
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm watch that includes Red Deer and a broad portion of central and southern Alberta. The watch was posted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and warns that conditions are favourable for storms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.
The agency says severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area during the afternoon and evening, with the threat continuing into the overnight hours for central and eastern parts of the province. The watch covers communities from Lacombe south to the Alberta–U.S. border.
"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain."
Forecasters highlighted several hazards associated with the storms, including the potential for tornadoes, local power outages and damage to roofs, fences, trees and other structures. Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding and sudden reductions in visibility, while strong winds and hail may cause property damage and injury.
