Durham Regional Police say investigators have arrested a man in connection with a violent sexual assault reported near Iroquois Beach Park in Whitby on the evening of July 13.
Allegation and initial response
Police were called at about 10:15 p.m. on Monday, July 13, after a woman reported she was attacked while leaving Iroquois Beach Park. According to investigators, the victim was walking along the sandy path that runs northwest toward Gordon Street when an unknown man forced her off the path into a tree line, threatened her and sexually assaulted her.
Investigation and arrest
Members of Durham Regional Police Service’s Special Victims Unit led the subsequent probe. Police said tips from the public assisted investigators in identifying a suspect. On Thursday, July 16, officers, with assistance from the Offender Management Unit, located the man in Whitby and arrested him without incident.
“Following an extensive investigation by members of the Special Victims Unit, with the assistance of tips from the public, the suspect was identified.”
Charges and conditions
The accused has been named as Dwayne Horace DALEY, 33, of Ajax. He is charged with:
- Sexual assault
- Uttering threats
- Robbery
- Fail to comply with release order — four counts
Police say Daley was subject to house-arrest curfew conditions at the time of the alleged offence. He was held for a bail hearing following his arrest.
