One person dead, driver airlifted after early-morning rollover
A single-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford early Monday left one passenger dead and seriously injured the driver, prompting an extensive closure during the morning commute. According to the Abbotsford Police Department (APD), officers were called to the centre median near Cole Road just before 2 a.m. on July 20, where they found a vehicle that had rolled after leaving the westbound lanes.
Two occupants received immediate medical aid at the scene. The passenger was pronounced deceased, while the driver was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police say impairment is under investigation
Investigators have not released identifying details of the people involved. In a statement, police indicated they are examining whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.
“Preliminary evidence indicates the vehicle was travelling westbound on Highway 1 when it lost control, rolled, and came to rest in the centre median. Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing factor in the collision,” police said.
The APD’s Patrol Section is leading the file with support from the department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit and the regional Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS). The examination is in its early stages, and police are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision.

The crash forced a full closure of Highway 1 in both directions overnight. By early morning, one eastbound lane had reopened, while westbound remained shut between No. 3 Road and Whatcom Road. As of 7:08 a.m., crews were working to restore at least one additional lane within about an hour, police said. Motorists are urged to expect delays and to use caution around the scene as investigators complete measurements and debris removal.
