The city of Oshawa is asking cyclists and pedestrians to expect detours along the Joseph Kolodzie Oshawa Creek Bike Path this summer as multiple sections remain closed for safety assessments and construction work.
What’s closed and why
On Feb. 9, 2026 the Midtown Mall pedestrian bridge over Oshawa Creek was shut without a return date. City notices list the closure as "until further notice" and say it was taken for "public safety" after structural concerns were identified. Officials say they are still assessing repair options.
"until further notice" and "for public safety."
Another portion of the trail beneath the Gibb Street bridge has been closed since 2022 because of safety concerns. The city has installed a temporary reroute and says the permanent alignment is being coordinated with Durham Region’s Gibb Street Bridge replacement project and future road widening plans. No timelines have been set; the city has said it will provide updates once construction scheduling is finalised.
In addition to those closures, a stretch of the path adjacent to Oshawa Creek is closed on weekdays for rehabilitation work. That closure runs from the Wentworth Street West underpass to 20 metres south of Thomas Street and includes the trail-head parking lot at 200 Thomas Street. The weekday restriction is in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, through to the end of October. The city warns that unfavourable weather could affect the work schedule.
How users are affected
- Access to the Midtown Mall pedestrian bridge is currently blocked with no reopening date announced.
- Trail users should follow temporary reroutes under the Gibb Street bridge; those detours may remain in place while regional bridge replacement and road widening plans proceed.
- Weekday daytime access between Wentworth Street West and Thomas Street is restricted until late October for rehabilitation work; weekend use is not affected by that specific restriction.
Closure summary
| Location | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Midtown Mall pedestrian bridge | Closed | Closed Feb. 9, 2026; structural concerns; "until further notice" |
| Under Gibb Street bridge | Closed / rerouted | Closed since 2022; temporary reroute while coordinating with Gibb St. bridge replacement |
| Wentworth St. W underpass to 20 m south of Thomas St. | Weekday daytime closure | 7 a.m.–5 p.m., Mon–Fri until end of October for Oshawa Creek rehabilitation |
City staff have not provided reopening dates for the Midtown Mall bridge or a final schedule for the Gibb Street-area works. Riders and pedestrians who rely on the trail for commuting or recreation should check the city website for the latest alignment maps and construction notices before travelling.
The closures underscore the overlap between municipal infrastructure maintenance and regional roadway projects; residents can expect intermittent changes to trail access while assessments and larger bridge/redevelopment plans move forward.
