Single-vehicle crash on Highway 1 leaves one dead; investigation under way
Abbotsford police are investigating after a single-vehicle collision on Highway 1 early Monday that left one person dead and another seriously hurt. The crash, which occurred just before 2 a.m. near Cole Road, forced closures and delays on one of the region’s busiest routes while first responders worked at the scene.
According to the Abbotsford Police Department, officers found a vehicle that had left the highway and rolled into the centre median. Two people were inside. Both received immediate medical attention; the passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene and the driver was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say “impairment is suspected” in the crash.
The investigation is being led by Abbotsford PD’s Patrol Section with support from the Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS). Police say the inquiry remains in its early stages as investigators process the scene, interview witnesses and gather evidence.

Sgt. Paul Walker of the Abbotsford Police Department confirmed police attendance and described the multi-unit response. The involvement of ICARS indicates investigators are treating the collision as serious and are using technical resources to reconstruct events.
The department did not release the identities of those involved. As the probe continues, police will be collecting forensic evidence, reviewing any available video, and speaking with potential witnesses to determine the full circumstances leading to the vehicle leaving the highway and rolling into the median.
