The City of Barrie will resurface approximately 18.4 kilometres of roadways in 2026 as part of its annual pavement management program, municipal officials said in a news release. The work is intended to extend the life of existing streets, improve driving conditions and limit the need for more costly reconstruction down the road.
Scope and approach
Resurfacing typically targets surface distress such as cracking, rutting and deterioration of the upper pavement layers. The city says the program is a proactive step to preserve infrastructure and reduce future rehabilitation costs.

Where work is happening
Several projects are already complete or nearing completion. Downtown streets included in the 2026 list are:
- Bayfield Street (Simcoe Street to Sophia Street)
- Clapperton Street (Dunlop Street West to Collier Street)
- Collier Street (Bayfield Street to Mulcaster Street)
- Ross Street (Bayfield Street to Sophia Street)
Neighbourhood and arterial locations scheduled for resurfacing span the Cundles area, Letitia Heights and south Barrie, among others.

What residents should expect
Work will continue through the construction season; residents in affected areas can expect temporary lane closures, parking restrictions and intermittent traffic delays while crews resurface and repair road surfaces. The city recommends motorists plan alternate routes where possible and to allow extra travel time during working hours.
