Swamp Rat Experience has released the slate for its sixth season, combining participatory projects, artist development and two principal stage productions that will play in Fort McMurray during 2026–27.
Season highlights and local talent
The season opens in September with the company’s fifth annual Play In A Day, a 24-hour initiative where participants write, rehearse and present original short pieces. Later that month the event formerly known as the Miscast Musical Cabaret returns under a new title, Chaos Cabaret, continuing the company’s emphasis on unconventional casting and performer experimentation.
The major fall production is Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again, a political comedy by Nigerian playwright Ola Rotimi. The play is scheduled for Nov. 5 to 7 at the Keyano Theatre, with auditions set for Aug. 29. Direction is by Fort McMurray artist Lola Taiwo, whose recent work with the company sold out earlier this year.
“I’m incredibly excited to direct Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again and humbled to introduce audiences to one of Africa’s most beloved comedies,” said the production’s director.
Summer 2027 and artist development
Looking ahead to 2027, Swamp Rat Experience will mount the Canadian musical Ride the Cyclone in summer, a story about six chamber-choir teenagers who must argue for a chance to return to life after a fatal roller-coaster accident. The company says that production will feature immersive pre-show performances and partnerships with local artists.
Alongside staged work, the season offers programming aimed at emerging artists and younger participants, including:
- Theatre Club for ongoing community practice
- Summer drama camps for children and youth
- Workshops and master classes targeted to developing artists
- Pride Cabaret slated for June 2027
