AMC Entertainment reported the strongest quarter in its 106-year history, buoyed by surging attendance and a muscular debut for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, sending the exhibitor’s shares higher as investors weighed a firmer theatrical rebound and a leaner cost base.

The world’s largest cinema chain said second-quarter revenue climbed 14 per cent year over year to nearly US$1.6 billion, while adjusted EBITDA jumped 70 per cent to a record US$321 million. Net cash generated from operations rose to US$235 million, up from US$138 million in the comparable period. The company produced US$190 million in free cash flow and closed the quarter with US$778 million in cash and cash equivalents. AMC recorded a net loss of US$11.4 million, compared with US$4.7 million.

“While there’s still more work to do here, this was a source of hope,”

analyst Drew Crumb of B. Riley Securities wrote, pointing to tightened costs alongside broad-based gains in the United States and Europe. The quarter also benefited from the best theatrical opening of the year: Universal’s The Odyssey launched to a global US$264 million weekend, with 4.3 million people visiting AMC and Odeon locations from Thursday through Sunday.

Stronger demand meets debt repair

Chief executive Adam Aron framed the results as a pivot from years of strain—pandemic closures followed by the twin Hollywood strikes—and said the company’s scale and liquidity have been consistently underestimated. AMC refinanced US$400 million of debt in the quarter, extending the maturity by four years, raised about US$285 million through equity offerings and began trimming roughly US$282 million of principal. By the end of July, AMC expects that actions taken since late 2020 will have lowered principal debt balances by approximately US$1.7 billion, with no currently expected maturities until 2029.

Attendance trends were encouraging: total moviegoers increased 13.5 per cent from a year earlier—up 12 per cent domestically and 18 per cent internationally—as studios delivered more consistent releases and audiences returned in larger numbers. Aron said the company’s footprint across the U.S. and Europe “has often been underestimated,” underscoring momentum on both sides of the Atlantic.

Nolan’s epic as bellwether

The outsized performance of The Odyssey landed at a critical moment for exhibitors seeking stability after a choppy 2024 slate. For AMC, the weekend surge provided a visible proof point that premium event films can still catalyze traffic across formats and regions. The better-than-expected quarterly tally also reflects management’s emphasis on costs and liquidity, with leverage now tracking lower and maturities pushed out.

Even with a small quarterly loss, AMC’s operational momentum and cash generation position the chain to navigate a still-evolving release calendar. The company’s updates suggest a cleaner runway on the balance sheet, and a marketplace that—when presented with must-see titles—can deliver the kind of volume that once seemed out of reach during the industry’s most difficult years.

  • Revenue and adjusted EBITDA reached all-time quarterly highs, signalling firmer demand and cost discipline.
  • Debt moves extended maturities to 2029 and reduced principal balances by about US$1.7 billion since late 2020.
  • The Odyssey sparked a robust weekend, with 4.3 million AMC and Odeon admissions and a US$264 million global launch.
