A milestone in local affordable housing was reached on Friday as five Welland families took possession of new townhomes constructed by Habitat for Humanity Niagara. The handover took place during the organisation’s traditional key ceremony that symbolically welcomes families into their homes.
Project scope and community support
The development currently comprises a six-unit townhouse complex built on land purchased from the City of Welland. Of those units, keys were passed to five families at the ceremony. Habitat Niagara says a further three townhouses are planned for construction on the same property in the coming months.
Habitat Niagara described the build as its largest to date in the region and credited a broad coalition of support for the result. Volunteers, donors, businesses, tradespeople and community groups contributed in ways ranging from financial gifts and materials to skilled labour and volunteer hours.
“This project was a true community build,” said Mark Carl, Habitat Niagara CEO. “We did not receive government funding to build these homes. Instead, these homes were built by the generosity of people, community partners and organisations across Niagara.”
How families qualify and contribute
The homes were created through Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership Program. Prospective homeowners must demonstrate both a need for more suitable housing and the ability to make mortgage payments that are considered affordable under Habitat’s criteria. Selected families also commit to a partnership with Habitat that includes completing 500 volunteer hours before purchase.
- Volunteer work includes assisting on build sites and supporting Habitat events and ReStores.
- Participants take workshops on budgeting, home maintenance and other homeownership skills.
- Habitat Niagara is currently accepting applications for the remaining townhouses on the property.
Sarah Pritula, Habitat Niagara’s philanthropy and major gifts director, emphasised the program’s focus on long-term success, noting the process requires time, commitment and labour from partner families. The organisation is inviting interested and eligible Welland residents to apply for the forthcoming units.
