Fire crews are contending with multiple active wildfires in Halifax and Annapolis counties after a series of fires broke out Wednesday night, officials said Thursday.
Where the fires are burning
In Halifax Regional Municipality, a woodlot fire was reported off Mooseland Road near Jacket Lake, north of Tangier. Crews were dispatched at about 7 p.m. Wednesday and continued firefighting efforts until dark, at which point they withdrew for safety and returned to the site on Thursday morning. The Halifax blaze was estimated at roughly four hectares.
At the same time in Annapolis County, a wildfire was reported in the area of West Stoney Lake, south of Annapolis Royal and east of Highway 8 near the community of Perotte. Three volunteer fire departments, together with crews from the Department of Natural Resources, were on scene Thursday morning preparing to fight the fire. Two smaller fires were also reported nearby. A DNR helicopter was en route to assess the size and scope of the main blaze.
Response and current status
Fire services in both counties mobilized quickly. In Halifax, personnel from eight stations responded to the Jacket Lake fire. In Annapolis County, a combination of local volunteer departments and provincial natural-resources crews were coordinating initial action Thursday.
