Provincial update as fires expand
Premier Doug Ford told reporters in Toronto Monday that nearly 200 wildfires are burning across northern Ontario and have consumed roughly 735,000 hectares of land — an increase from the province's previous estimate of 650,000 hectares last week. He spoke alongside Jill Dunlop, minister of emergency preparedness and response, and Mike Harris, minister of natural resources, as officials outlined evacuation efforts and firefighting priorities.
Ford said recent rainfall over the weekend provided some relief to crews but cautioned that the situation remains volatile.

Provincial officials reported that about 1,800 people have left their communities because of the wildfires, and that 13 communities have been evacuated or are in the process of evacuating, with a decision pending for another community. The majority of active fires are in the northwest region, where dozens are listed as out of control.
"It's moving quickly," Premier Doug Ford said, describing the spread of fires across the province.
First Nations in remote areas have been hit hard. Chief Pauline Drake of Whitewater Lake First Nation said a blaze destroyed much of the community about 250 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, including homes and infrastructure.
"Homes, personal belongings and vital community infrastructure have been lost," Chief Pauline Drake wrote in a statement, describing damage to gravesites and other culturally significant areas.

Evacuees have travelled to host communities including Thunder Bay, Toronto, Sudbury and Niagara Falls. Officials are prioritizing life safety, property protection and critical infrastructure. Restricted fire zones and open-air burning bans remain in effect across the northwest until further notice.
