Local drive mobilizes support as northern fires rage
An Aurora-based music group has partnered with a Newmarket business to collect essentials for people forced from their homes by northern Ontario wildfires. Market Brewing Company and Aurora band The Beresfords are accepting donations in Newmarket through July 21 at 9 p.m., with a final push during the brewery’s trivia night from 6 to 9 p.m.
The organizers are urging York Region residents to contribute practical items and gift cards that can be put to immediate use by evacuees. On social media, the band called for neighbours to rally behind affected communities.
“Let’s show our true Canadian colours and help out our communities in the north,” The Beresfords said on Instagram.
Smoke from the fires has affected much of southern Ontario, including York Region, with Environment Canada maintaining an orange-level air quality advisory that may persist through the weekend. The region has advised residents to minimize exposure during periods of poor air quality.
“Monitor local conditions and take precautions to reduce your exposure and protect your health. Consider staying indoors and reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities,” the region said on social media.
