Toronto — The Toronto International Film Festival has revealed five films that will screen in its Special Presentations strand this September, a roster that mixes star-driven fare with first-time directors and international auteurs.
High-profile producers and actors headline lineup
Among the announced titles is the romantic drama Love of Your Life, produced in part by Canadian star Ryan Gosling. The film, which reportedly drew intense interest from distributors during its script stage, is fronted by Margaret Qualley and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Directed by Rachel Morrison — best known for her cinematography on Black Panther and the Oscar-nominated Mudbound — the picture is slated to stream on Prime Video in October.
TIFF also booked The Housewife, the debut feature from Toronto-born director Ben Shirinian. Set in the 1960s, that drama casts Naomi Watts as a New York Times journalist who uncovers a potential war-crimes suspect living in Queens and forms an unexpected connection with the suspect’s wife. The film’s supporting cast includes Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli and Norman Reedus.
Varied tones — from thriller to comedy
The slate continues to span genres and geographies. New York–set crime drama Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother marks a world premiere for U.S. filmmaker Bassam Tariq and stars Mahershala Ali as a religiously minded hit man trying to protect his children. Argentine director Benjamín Naishtat brings a revenge drama titled Glaxo, featuring singer-actress Lali Espósito. And the sibling-directed science-fiction comedy Alpha Gang, with an international premiere at TIFF, rounds out the group; it stars Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp and Dave Bautista.
