The Civic Service Union 52 has set up a $175,000 emergency relief fund to assist members temporarily laid off after flooding forced the closure of Edmonton’s Telus World of Science.
Support for workers hit by an unexpected shutdown
The union’s board approved the package after the science centre issued temporary layoff notices following flooding on July 10. The facility announced it will remain closed until November. CSU 52 represents more than 8,000 employees across five workplaces in Edmonton; the science centre is one of six bargaining units within that membership.
“The flooding at the Telus World of Science was an unforeseen event that disrupted the normal operations of this much-loved facility,” said Bryce Jowett, president of CSU 52.
CSU 52 says more than 180 members — both full- and part-time — are employed at the science centre, and roughly 145 of them are expected to be affected by temporary layoffs. The union will provide a one-time grant to qualifying members whose work interruptions are a direct consequence of the flooding.
Who will receive aid and how much
- Eligible part-time employees will receive a one-time payment of $1,000.
- Eligible full-time employees will receive a one-time payment of $1,800.
- Grants will be paid directly to qualifying union members.
In explaining the relief, the union framed the assistance as a way to ease the short-term financial burden of an unexpected interruption to employment while acknowledging that the payments do not replace stable income.
Context and consequences
The Telus World of Science is a public-facing cultural and educational institution that serves school groups, families and visitors. Its extended closure has immediate labour-market effects for staff and may also disrupt scheduled programming and revenue streams for the centre. The union’s fund aims to provide temporary financial relief to workers who now face reduced hours or unpaid leaves.
By offering direct payments to affected members, CSU 52 has chosen a targeted, member-focused response. The move also highlights the role of labour organisations in cushioning employees against sudden operational shocks to cultural and scientific venues.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Emergency fund | $175,000 |
| CSU 52 total membership (Edmonton workplaces) | More than 8,000 |
| Science centre employees represented by union | More than 180 |
| Expected to be affected by layoffs | About 145 |
| Part-time grant | $1,000 |
| Full-time grant | $1,800 |
For now, the priority for union leaders and workers is financial stability during the closure and a safe, timely reopening of the venue. The union expressed hope that the facility can resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so, underlining both workers’ needs and public interest in restoring access to science programming.
